On Wednesday, the UAB staff and engineering staff completed construction on a 10,600-square-foot concrete basement. A new building is due this year for parking spaces, a library, and a second floor as an active space.

"It was an awesome effort to accomplish what we want to do and really show our community that we can do it better," UAB Chancellor John F. Halsey said. "It wasn't all about a job description, it was about community, and helping each other build a strong community."

UAB has also been working on an educational project called "Parkside" at the site called First Nations Way — and has been working on a new program called Indigenous Residential Schools (IMSS). The IMSS was recently updated as one of the first publicly funded projects in the university's community colleges, which are in part funded from the federal government. The new program would start in 2018-2019.

"We wanted to show the community and see how they are connecting with other nations in an incredibly powerful way and build relationships with other nations. We wanted to show people this is where we want them to go and get to where they're headed," UAB Chancellor Halsey said. "It was great to see these two young men who were so successful in their careers being able to have one thing that can get
