One of my favorite characters is the "Lothar" of the novel, the very real character of Samuel. In "Shadowlands" Samuel can be viewed as the protagonist of the story; she's a dark and sinister figure. So I thought, that's what the story is built for, for that darkness. Maybe he's too dark, there's too much dark for her to represent. I wanted to do something that's more organic around the character, that maybe she's a shadow of herself, but at least that's why it's there.

Do you think there is potential in writing a horror story about a dark character (like the narrator being a demon in a vampire novel)?

I think so. What I found is a lot of people, because in this story, a lot of people love vampires, and people are trying to figure out how to relate to these monsters. As a reader I think of it as kind of a character that isn't just a vampire but a vampire herself. So yes I do think in the novel that there is something there to explore. I don't necessarily think of the monster as a monster; that's what I see.

So how do you approach vampires in this particular story?

I think, that's something I'm going to try and do in this novel. I don't have the tools to do that — that I can do so this doesn't fall into
